Under the Silhouette by bkm Under the Silhouette by bkm
Ever wondered how it looks like under the silhouette in a photo? Now here's your chance to take a look.

This is a single shot photo, no stiches from other photos. The light data from the near-black pixels on the lower half of the image has been carefully extracted and restored back to "normal" light conditions. Because the lower half was virtually black, this process is really exhausting the data information from the base, hence the slight noise and banding.

You can see a lighthouse there to the left of the halo in the sun.

Note: Post processed in PS.

This most of all stuck out on the first page of your gallery (not that the ENTIRE thing isn't insanely amazing, ^^; but this caught my interest most.) The dark sillhouettes in the background contrast with the blinding colors in the foreground perfectly. The sky is beautiful as well, streaked with just the right amount of clouds and colors. I also find it extremely interesting on how you came to manage to manipulate the pic so, it's quite honestly spectacular. Great job as always =D

the rocks look very nice, but have they been slighty boosted with a contrast in PS?

Please read the text that follows the picture, and the category. The whole point of this image is to show that there is a lot of "hidden" data in the was virtually black area of the pic which actually can be restored back to "normal" with some careful post processing. So of course it has been "boosted". This type of image is near impossible to shoot without this post pro technique. And the funny thing is that I'm the one bringing the "truth" in the scene forward to the picture, not the camera itself (Which is trying to "hide" it). If you don't know what I'm saying here, take some time to read about how cameras handle lighting in different proportions and from different angles, especially digital cameras. It's something that can be used to your advantage when shooting pics, and sometimes it can be an direct annoyance (F.ex. the rather infamous scenario when you're shooting a bright sky against a darker ground (digital cameras has a big problem with this)).

Thanks for you interest :thanks:

Actually I think the noise and banding have really added something here. The vivid colors are really enhanced... this is a truly beautiful and stunning piece.

If I may, where is this location?

WOW - pretty amazing effect you achieved! The sky and clouds were probably enough to make this a very nice image - but you took it from nice to amazing by bringing the foreground back to life.

My first question when i seen this picture was : how did he do ? Flash ? Or other lighting ? Now i undersand... PHOTOSHOP the great :D The result is trully impressive, the black gradient is quite strange because it does not correspond to a normal lighting but at final it makes a great pricture :)
Very nice !!!!

Those foreground rocks are giving me good vibes! I like this very much, great range of colours and the small amount of cloud takes the sky out of the too ordinary realm!! :+fav:

This is a very interesting shot. It looks so cool the way the darkened silhouette is in the middle of the photo with such vivid colors above and below. The colors are great too...you have a whole rainbow of colors in this one. Great eye for detail.

Holy sh**!
Another fantastic one!
Do you shoot in RAW mode with your 10d? I guess so, since I see no other way of retrieving underexposed details when post-processing the image.
See, since I'm shooting slides exclusively I wonder how a similar effect can be achieved...maybe with a fill-in flash?
Anyways...you sure did one hell of an amazing job with this shot.

Yes I'm shooting all my pictures in RAW now in my latest deviations. And I've also started to only edit in 16 bit mode. This means I have a considerable broader range to work with with to get a cleaner result. I presume you can also retrive the data from the underexposed image without shooting in RAW, but then I would expect slightly less precision. I'm sure you could even do this effect with scanned analog images. I'm not sure what the outcome would be with a fill-in flash, if it would have enough reach, and if the light came out natural. But it would be fun to find out. Let me know if you try.

Anyway, thank you :)
